Fresh sweet dates ready for spring recipes

Spring is as good an excuse as any to open the pantry and actually look at what’s in it. Half of what’s back there by March is usually stale, half-used, or something bought for one recipe two years ago. A proper clear-out takes twenty minutes and changes what you reach for the rest of the year.

Start with the pantry, not the fridge

Check expiry dates on spices (most lose potency after a year, even unopened), flours, and anything in a bag that’s been folded shut with a clip for months. Dried fruit, including dates, keeps far longer than most pantry staples if stored properly — sealed, cool, out of direct light — so it’s usually the one thing worth restocking rather than tossing. Swap one processed snack for a whole-food one

Spring is a reasonable time to trade one packaged snack for something with fewer ingredients on the label. A few dates stuffed with a walnut half do the job of a granola bar with none of the added syrup. It’s not a diet overhaul — it’s one swap, which is exactly why it tends to stick.

Cook with what’s actually in season

Asparagus, peas, spring onions, and early strawberries show up in March and April in most markets. Building a few meals around them, rather than around whatever’s been sitting in the freezer since winter, is the simplest version of a “diet makeover” — no tracking app required.

A simple spring dessert worth keeping around

Chopped dates, a squeeze of orange, and a handful of pistachios make a five-minute dessert that doesn’t need the oven — useful once the weather turns warm enough that nobody wants to bake. It’s also a decent way to use up dates that have started drying out at the edges rather than throwing them away.

None of this requires buying new equipment or following a strict plan. A cleared-out pantry and a few better-stocked basics — dates among them — do more for a kitchen than most seasonal makeovers promise. See our About Us page for more on where ours come from.
